Defensive coordinator Mike Elko had a senior-laden unit in 2018 and must regroup with just four starters returning. After taking its lumps last season, Auburn's offensive line should be one of the team's strengths but it may not matter if the Tigers' new starting quarterback struggles. The defense should be solid yet again with one of the nation's top defensive lines and a seasoned secondary leading the way.
Two rushes from Burrow put the Tigers on the Alabama 31, and two passes put them at Alabama's 1, resulting in a 1-yard Edwards-Helaire touchdown that brought the score to 26–13. After receiving the kickoff at their own 29, Tagovailoa threw an interception that put the Tigers on Alabama's 26. A personal foul against Landon Dickerson put the Tigers at the 13, and they scored a touchdown on their next play, resulting in a score of 33–13.

Northwestern State heads to Baton Rouge in Week 3 after what will be a huge and nationally significant showdown against Texas and before kicking off SEC play on the road against a scrappy Vanderbilt squad. Joe Burrow had 493 passing yards, seven passing touchdowns, and a rushing touchdown in just over one half of play; he was named Offensive MVP of the game. Linebacker K'Lavon Chaisson was named Defensive MVP after finishing with two sacks and six tackles. Justin Jefferson finished with 14 receptions for 227 yards and four touchdowns in the game. The 2019 game was not nearly as close, as LSU secured an undefeated regular season with a 50–7 blowout win.
The Tigers prevailed in a close game with a score of 45–38, as Burrow threw four touchdown passes and placekicker Cade York scored three field goals. Following the win, LSU moved up to No. 4 in the AP Poll before a September 14 home win against the Northwestern State Demons of the Football Championship Subdivision. LSU opened the scoring on their opening drive with a 34-yard touchdown pass from Joe Burrow to Ja'Marr Chase. After each team traded missed field goal attempts, LSU scored again with a four-yard run by Tyrion Davis-Price. Two more second quarter scores by LSU, the first a 51-yard pass from Burrow to Chase, and the second a 12-yard pass from Burrow to Justin Jefferson, made the score 28–0. Ole Miss got on the board in the second quarter with a five-yard touchdown run by John Rhys Plumlee, and LSU converted a 33-yard field goal in the final seconds of the half to make the score 31–7 at half-time.

In the fourth quarter, the Tigers scored on a 54-yard punt return touchdown by Trey Palmer, and a two-yard touchdown run by Davis-Price. Following the win over Ole Miss, Alabama moved to No. 1 before an October 12 road game against the No. 24 Texas A&M Aggies, the Crimson Tide's first ranked opponent of the season. Alabama won the game, which saw Tagovailoa break the school record of 80 passing touchdowns in a career, previously held by A. Next week, the Crimson Tide hosted the Tennessee Volunteers in a winning effort, during which Tagovailoa suffered an ankle injury. Mac Jones served as the starting quarterback for the following game against the Arkansas Razorbacks, which Alabama won by 41 points.
Several news sources expected the game to be high-scoring with a predicted combined score of around 60 points. On the day of the game, ESPN's Football Power Index gave Alabama a 71.8 percent chance of winning. With the win, LSU finished as undefeated College Football Playoff champions, and were later crowned unanimous national champions by the polls. This was LSU's fourth national title in school history, and first since the 2007 season. It was their first undefeated season since 1958, and the second ever 15–0 season by any FBS team in the modern era . Joe Burrow had 463 passing yards and five touchdowns in the game, and was named Offensive MVP. Linebacker Patrick Queen had eight total tackles, including 0.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss and was named Defensive MVP. LSU's opening possession of the second half ended with a 28-yard field goal by York, and Georgia's ensuing possession resulted in a 37-yard miss by Blankenship.
For its third non-conference game of the season, LSU returned home to play in-state FCS foe Northwestern State of the Southland Conference. After a closer-than-expected first half, LSU pulled away for a decisive 65–14 victory. Following an open date on Nov. 2, LSU goes on the road for back-to-back road games against Alabama on Nov. 9 and Ole Miss on Nov. 16. The Tigers close out the regular season at home, hosting Arkansas on Nov. 23 followed by Texas A&M on Nov. 30. There is a lot to look forward to on the 2019 slate, and luckily for Longhorns fans, only two of the 12 slated games are outside of a three-hour drive.

Nineteen of the players from both teams who competed in the game later went on to be first-round draft picks in the annual National Football League Draft in 2020, 2021, and 2022. The Aggies host South Carolina and then take a trip to Athens to face two-time defending SEC East champ Georgia. Back-to-back road games against teams as talented as Georgia and LSU is brutal for any squad. Vanderbilt was a tough team to get a grasp on during their 6-7, 3-5, run in Derek Mason's fifth season in Nashville.
Coming into the game, Alabama ranked second in the nation in points per game (48.6), with the offense averaging 168 rushing yards per game. Tagovailoa had a completion percentage of 74.7, passing for 2,166 yards, including nine passes that resulted in a gain of at least 40 yards. The team had what Athlon called "the nation's best receiving corps", consisting of Smith, Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs, and Jaylen Waddle, who had a combined 24 touchdown receptions that season. On defense, the Crimson Tide had held opposing teams to only 15.2 points per game and had allowed only one play that resulted in a gain of at least 40 yards. The defense kept opposing teams to just 4.54 yards per play, ranking 14th in the nation. The Tigers offense, led by quarterback and future Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow, dominated the first half of the game and led at halftime by a score of 33–13.
LSU finished their season by defeating the Clemson Tigers in the CFP Championship game on January 13, 2020, to claim the national title. The team is one of only two in the modern era of college football to complete a perfect 15-game season, joining the 2018 Clemson Tigers, and several sources list them as one of the best college football teams of all time. Following a touchback, the Tigers started the second half from their 25. After several plays, they had progressed to Alabama's 36, but a fumble resulting from a sack gave Alabama possession on their own 42.
In the fourth quarter, Georgia scored its only touchdown via a two-yard pass from Fromm to George Pickens, and LSU scored with a 50-yard field goal by York to end the scoring at 37–10. LSU advanced to within the Mississippi State 10 yard-line on each of their first three drives, but had to settle for field goals each time. Cade York converted from 20, 23, and 25 yards to make the score 9–0 midway through the second quarter. Mississippi State made the score 9–7 with a 12-yard touchdown run by Garrett Shrader. In the third quarter, LSU scored twice more, with a 37-yard touchdown pass from Burrow to Derrick Dillon, and then an 18-yard touchdown pass from Burrow to Justin Jefferson, after which the score was 36–7. Neither team scored again until Mississippi State scored a touchdown in the final minute of the game, a 24-yard pass from Shrader to Stephen Guidry, to make the score 36–13.
Following this, the Crimson Tide had another bye week before their game against LSU. In the days leading up to the game, it was unsure if Tagovailoa would play due to his injury, with head coach Nick Saban saying that it would be a game-time decision. To open the second half, LSU's Micah Baskerville returned a Vanderbilt onside kick attempt 46 yards to the one yard line, after which Burrow threw his fifth touchdown pass to Racey McMath. Vanderbilt responded with a 52-yard touchdown run by Ke'Shawn Vaughn. LSU then scored again with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Burrow to Ja'Marr Chase, Burrow's sixth of the day.
